"In his old age when he could no longer carve, my grandfather asked me to carve a devil for a composition of San Miguel Arcangel and he described the piece to me. He wanted the devil's hands to turn into those of a beast, from fingers to claws, and his head to resemble the clowns of medieval times with horns like a bull. His body, he said, must be without legs and turn into a tail like a rattlesnake. With this description I carved the El Diablo. I have placed it in the composition of San Miguel Arcangel, but when presented alone I have placed an apple in his hand so he that represents temptation in the Garden of Eden."
