"This bronze sculpture of San Rafael Arcangel was inspired by 19th century santero Rafael Aragon. The original figure was intricately carved in wood in maquet size and then also enlarged five times to make it a life-size monumental.
The sculpture is a biblical depiction of Raphael the Archangel as he is described in the Book of Tobias, which relates that Saint Raphael was the protector of Tobias on his journey to secure a miraculous fish to heal the blindness of his father. Thus San Rafael Arcangel became the protector of travelers, an important role in colonial New Mexico.
Religious folklore also attributes the patronage of San Rafael as a source of spiritual and physical healing, against eye trouble, and as a guide to travelers and pilgrims."
