"The bronze sculpture of San Gabriel Arcangel is made from an intricately carved piece of wood. A latex mold is made from the carving, and then following the lost wax technique, a bronze sculpture is made. Pigmented and ferric patinas are placed on the bronze to match the natural pigments used to polychrome the traditional woodcarving.
San Gabriel Arcangel is one of four archangels; Gabriel is a messenger from God bringing enlightenment. He is the angel of the annunciation informing the Virgin Mary she will be the mother of Jesus. My grandfather, Aurelio Maria Oviedo, who was my teacher and mentor in carving saints told me that when I carved a San Gabriel, to make it presenting a crown to the Virgin. This symbolizes that she will be Queen of the Heavens by the birth of Jesus."
Marco's version of San Gabriel Arcangel is his own, combining his respect for the style of New Mexican carver, Rafael Aragon, and the Mexican Baroque masters, as well as the memory of his Grandfather.
