"I call a sculpture of San Francisco de Assisi my 'Italian Style' since I made it at the suggestion of my mother, Angelica, who wanted a more European style of St. Francis rather than traditional New Mexican colonial style.
Over many years, she brought me small statues, images and other examples of what she wanted me to make. All these inspired me to make a sculpture with a more elaborate tunic and with tender details like the birds eating from a plate in his hands. The expression on San Francisco is representative of 14th century images. His sandals are also part of the apparel of the Franciscan order in the 12th century."
