"This sculpture is part of the series of southwest women that depict the deep roots of the Native American Culture. Her dress represents Mother Earth, as enhanced by the earth-tone patina transitioning from earth to sky. The folds in the dress represent the Sangre de Cristo pinon-juniper foothills and valleys. A drawing by Michelangelo of the Virgin Mary inspires her hands, but instead of holding the child Jesus, she lovingly holds a southwest pot filled with beautiful mountain flowers. The pot is ornate with stones of lapis and coral. Her necklace has a coral teardrop. Her face is that of one of my Native American friends who is one of the most progressive and amazing women I have met."
