"The inspiration for this composition comes from two breath-taking pictures by Edward S. Curtis, a well-known American photographer that captured the Native American way of life in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The pictures are found in his book, 'Portraits from North American Indian Life'.
The composition depicts a Blackfoot Indian Man leading a pregnant mare with a travois and ridden by a Piegan Indian woman as shown in two of the photographs in Curtis' book. Each figure is sculpted in detail showing the body language captured in the photograph. The woman's face represents joy and happiness in finding a place that can be respected and honored. The warrior's face is that of an Indian Chief who is the grandfather of a personal friend and colleague of mine. The face is one of serenity and determination to protect their territory and traditions. The travois is loaded with pelts, tools, and other possessions.
The piece is dedicated to the fourth centennial celebration of when the Spanish arrived in the southwest. One of their main contributions to the Indian was the horse, which in the composition is represented as the ancestor to the modern day Spanish Mustang. The piece is also dedicated to the Native American culture with their beautiful history and way of life. The composition depicts a bridge from the past to the future and is the basis for the title 'Hope.'"
