"Inspired by another sculpture that I make, the "Rain Serpent," I began putting together different elements of the southwest Indian and Spanish traditions to create a new serpent that would produce a balance with the Rain Serpent, like the Ying and Yang symbols.
In the head, I included the Anasazi element of the hood. The tongue is in form of a flam, also representing an arrowhead. The three steps in the neck, three steps on the back and two steps in the tail represent the Eight Northern Pueblos. The golden dots on the neck, four on each side and four on the tail on each side, represent the 12 months of the year as a seasonal almanac, used for planning yearly activities such as planting, fishing and hunting. A mesa, or plateau, is on the top of the serpent to be used as a candleholder or incense burner. On the sides of the serpent is a design element used in Rio Grande textiles and Spanish carving that was well adopted by artists of Indian and Spanish heritage.
The soft curved line on top or bottom of the fire serpent has an opposite angular side. For example, in the bottom of the neck there is an angular step in a reverse way from that opposite the top by a smooth side that goes from the top of the head all way to the back. Then the top of the back is angular and the belly is a soft curve that goes all the way to the tail. This is a beautiful sculpture that will grow on you as you discover more details and hidden shapes."
