The Simple Wood Nativity made by Marco is carved out of pine, then polychromed using Spanish Colonial folk art techniques, and resulting in one-of-a-kind carvings. Polychroming includes applying coats of animal hide glue and gesso (a gypsum suspension that provides a base for painting) onto the woodcarved image, then painting with natural pigments and then being waxed. The composition of carvings of Mary and Joseph show them in prayerful stance with the baby Jesus between them in a manger. Above them all is an Angel, which is guarding all three. Marco playfully has made the baby Jesus with feet, depicting him as a two-year old in his “terrible twos” making the guarding by the angel most important.
