"This sculpture composition is one of the most personal and difficult challenges I have encountered in my career as a sculptor. It took me seven years to finish. I modeled the composition in clay from a few Polaroid snapshots I had taken of two very dear people in my life, my son Jacobo Javier and my father-in-law Jake O. Trujillo, master weaver, traditional northern New Mexican farmer, and incomparable family man. This piece dedicated to memory of Jake. The scene captures an evening when Jake was teaching my 4 year old son J.J. how to make a chile ristra.
The composition has accurate detail in their faces, clothes, chile peppers, pocket knife, bench and bushel full of red chiles. I have always wanted to make a series that can be called 'traditions' and this piece is an excellent start. I hope God gives me time."
