"As a boy I was mesmerized as I watched my grandfather carve and my father sculpt in clay. I was then sent to learn from a friend of the family who was an indigenous sculptor, called Tio Lupe. After many exercises and failed projects through the summer, I worked my way to sculpt a grasshopper out of a green stone. The Director of the Shidoni Gallery in Tesuque, New Mexico, asked me if I could do small baby grasshoppers. I made some two-inch babies in clay and cast them in bronze. Later, the owner of Lumina Gallery, in Taos, asked me to do a monumental size grasshopper. I made a sculpture of one 60 inches long and named it 'Don Chapulin.'"
